Legal Proliferation

Aldon Hynes points to a website with an article about a bill in Congress to ban urban rumors. It's a false story, but well-written, and I didn't dismiss it automatically. That says something about my expectations of Congress.

Aldon also cites this great quote by Laurence J. Peter:
Some problems are so complex that you have to be highly intelligent and well informed just to be undecided about them.
Maybe that's why democratic systems seem to work despite all their obvious inefficiencies. The level of complexity government has to deal with is really too much for government to deal with, so sifting complex problems through a citizenry that has the ability and incentive to inform itself is likely to be a better problem-solving approach than a solution imposed by a small group of elites.

Comments:
Yes, but ever time we lefties try to say, "its more complex than you are making it out," we get shouted down as being nuanced (generally speaking). That was the problem with the last election. Bush sees things only in black and white and acts that way. Kerry sees things as grey and acts that way... I want a president who sees things as grey and then acts as if it is black and white. Neither of the candidates had that capability.

I like that line:
"I want a president who sees things as grey and then acts as if it is black and white."

But do you mean "acts as if it is black or white" or "is able to make a decision"? I really don't believe Bush always understands the need for protections against possible human evils. He's good at seeing positives, but I think he misses some basic human tendencies that can warp a system and fails to understand the need to protect against such a development.

I think you're going to drive me to read the transcripts of those tapes.

As to "we lefties", you hardly seem like what I would call a leftwinger. You seem to belong in the vast middle, maybe on the leftwing side.

see the world as grey = inquisitive and looks at problems from more than 1 or two angles, but 5 or 6. And if the president can't do it himself/herself, will surround themselves with people who can.

Acts in black and white = makes a decision and then stands up in front of the American people and can tell you what it is and why.

Yes, I am a centrist, but definitely left of center.
